Clementina, la comerciante, by Adriana Ramírez

Clementina, la comerciante, by Adriana Ramírez

$ 10.00

Clementina Trujillo was the only woman among the great Colombian merchants of the early 20th century. At a time when women's roles were confined to the home, she broke all the rules: she was a businesswoman who built her own fortune; she never married or had children; and she proved that success could depend on intelligence, determination and independence.

Based on real events, this work of historical fiction invites readers to discover the story of this visionary woman who challenged the social norms of her time. It is an ideal read for Level 4 Spanish students, as it is carefully written with 451 word families, 131 of which are cognates, to facilitate comprehension and language learning.

This inspiring story is also an educational tool, combining accessible language, cultural context and historical richness to make learning Spanish a meaningful and motivating experience.

Inspiring story of a trailblazing entrepreneur

Every time I read a book by Adriana Ramírez it becomes my new favorite. Clementina is no exception. The story is a template for entrepreneurship and allyship and friendship. Brain researchers tell us that our brains light up exactly the same way when we are reading a story as when we are having the experiences. At the end I had that happy goosebump feeling where the emotion rises inside of you and might come out in tears. The clever ways in which she approaches challenges creatively and succeeds in ways that her competitors don't is interesting and inspiring. There are pages and pages of information at the beginning and ending explaining idiomatic expressions and cultural information and questions to ask students or yourself to think more deeply about expectations for women and the boxes they are put in. It's an advanced novel appropiate for level 4 or native speakers, but even if you are a Spanish teacher wanting to improve your own Spanish or an independent learner who needs the very complete glossary you will love the story and the telling of it. This is my new favorite Adriana Ramírez book. It would work as a class novel at upper levels or as independent reading for heritage speakers. Young women should read the book because Clementina was an inspiration. Young men should read it because having female role models like this dismantle the idea that only men can achieve this kind of success and open more doors in the future.
